Using air conditioning improperly can cause children to suffer from respiratory diseases. The following 8 rules will help newborns sleep in air conditioning comfortably without getting sick.

During the summer when the outdoor temperature reaches 40 degrees, cooling with a fan alone is not enough; air conditioning must be used to dispel the hot air in the atmosphere to ensure the baby has a good sleep. Using air conditioning improperly can cause children to suffer from respiratory diseases. The following 8 rules will help newborns sleep in air conditioning comfortably without getting sick.

  1. Clean the air conditioner before entering the hot season

The air conditioner, newly turned on after a long winter, needs to be cleaned thoroughly, recharged with gas, and dust removed from the filter mesh to avoid various molds, bacteria, or germs that have been residing in the machine for a long time, affecting the baby’s respiratory system

  1. Do not let the air conditioner’s draft blow directly onto the baby

To ensure newborns sleep safely in air conditioning, mothers should pay attention to the direction of the air conditioner installation; the air should not blow directly towards where the baby is lying. The cold but dry air from the air conditioner can easily cause the baby’s sensitive respiratory system to become allergic, dry, and sore throat, leading to rhinitis, bronchitis… You should also not set the fan speed too high but can use the automatic rotation mode for the air to be evenly distributed throughout the room.

The position of the air conditioner should be high up. The air vent of the air conditioner should not be directed straight towards the baby, nor should the fan speed be set too high. It should be set at the lowest fan speed and in rotation mode, absolutely not in a straight running mode at one angle.

  1. Newborns should drink plenty of water

When sleeping in air conditioning In hot weather, drinking plenty of water is never redundant advice. The most concerning issue when letting newborns sleep in air conditioning is dehydration. Dehydration not only weakens the body, making it prone to illness, but also causes constipation due to hard, difficult-to-digest stools. Mothers should ensure that the baby is well-hydrated while sleeping in air conditioning. Whether it’s plain water, breast milk, formula, fruit juice, or soup… all are effective in replenishing the body’s fluids. Additionally, mothers should pay attention to a small rule in the child’s diet, which is to eat more vegetables and fruits.

  1. Adjust the air conditioner temperature appropriately

When letting newborns sleep in air conditioning, mothers should be careful not to set the temperature too different from the outside temperature. With the current hot weather, the temperature should only be set between 26-28 degrees for children over one year old and 29-30 degrees for newborns. Since the baby’s body is still fragile, even if it is hot, parents should not set the temperature too low as it can cause the child to catch a cold. It is advisable to cover the baby with a thin blanket when sleeping in air conditioning, covering the belly and legs.

  1. Turn on the air conditioner for 2-3 hours at a time

Turn off the air conditioner about 2 hours before the baby wakes up so that the baby gradually gets used to the air temperature before going outside, avoiding thermal shock. Before letting the newborn sleep in air conditioning, if the baby sweats a lot from playing, the mother should wipe the sweat dry and let the baby rest for a few minutes before entering the air-conditioned room, because when the pores are open, the immediate cold can easily cause the baby to catch a cold.

  1. Apply the 3-minute rule for newborns sleeping in air conditioning

The sudden temperature difference between inside and outside the air-conditioned room can quickly “defeat” a child’s resistance, making them prone to fever, flu, and cough. Mothers should remember to open the door 3-5 minutes before taking the newborn out from the air conditioning, allowing the child to stand and play nearby to get used to the hot air outside. On the other hand, when the baby comes in from outside and is sweaty, the mother should also wipe the sweat off the child and let the child rest for at least 3 minutes at normal room temperature, avoiding immediate entry into the cold air-conditioned room with a sudden low temperature.

  1. Instill saline water into the baby’s nose

When letting newborns sleep in air conditioning, mothers should instill saline water into the baby’s nose before and after sleep because the air conditioning can dry out the baby’s nose, leading to nasal congestion and sneezing in children.

  1. Do not let newborns sleep in air conditioning 24/7

Running the air conditioner all day can cause stagnant air, which is not good for the health and respiratory system of the child. At least twice a day, mothers should turn off the air conditioner, open all doors, use a fan to drive out the stagnant air, and at the same time, let as much sunlight into the room as possible.
